What comes to your mind when you think about a foundation?
According to Grant Space, a foundation is a non-governmental entity that is established as a nonprofit corporation. It has the purpose for making grants to unrelated organizations and charitable purposes.
Companies and nonprofit organizations everywhere have foundations that make a huge impact in society. One in particular is the Emilio Nares Foundation. The ENF Foundation was created by a husband and wife, Richard and Diane Nares.
Richard and Diane had a five year old son, Emilio, who lost to a two year battle of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This cancer creates too many lymphocyte white blood cells in the bone marrow. Although Emilio’s family was greatly devastated from this trial they still wanted to make a difference.
During the time of Emilio’s battle, Richard and Diane met many other parents who were also going through the same battle that they were. They even met other families who were experiencing greater difficulties that they were during this fight for life. One of the large challenges that one of the parents had to face was the obstacle of lack of transportation. The Nares family explained how they met one mother who had to wake up at 4 a.m. to take multiple buses, and travel several blocks by foot to the bus stops just to get her two year old to receive treatments. And then after the long process of chemotherapy the mother and child would have to do this all over again in order to get home.
The Nares family was very shocked about the high struggle that transportation can actually be especially for those with medical problems. Public transportation is a good option but not always the most convenient especially with situations like this.
This was when the Nares family decided to create the Emilio Nares Foundation and provide 4,100 free van rides to low income families in the Southern California region. They called their campaign Ride with Emilio. The foundation also wanted to do more and even created shirts for the kids going through treatments that had buttons along the shoulder for easy access for treatments. They created these shirts to help decrease the children’s anxiety and feel more comfortable.
Foundations are a huge part of the world that we live in today. Foundations play a key role in healthy communities and building relationships in both nonprofit and the corporate world. Public relations individuals become a huge outlet for these foundations for increasing awareness, building consumer interest, and helping others work for the bigger purpose.
Foundations like the Emilio Nares Foundations impact lives and the work that public relations individuals do in foundations make an impact as well.
