Exercise One: “Bankers Call for Wider Measures to Stem Crisis”

This article has a lot of statistics and facts about the need for prevention of the European Debt Crisis. First I would create different widgets on graphic that would help the audience understand the different attributes to this current event. I would create a map that highlights all of the main sites that is being effected through the debt crisis in Europe. I would prefer for the map to be an animated graph. My vision is for the audience to click on the map and see the different potential regions that the crisis is moving to or has already hit. This current event can have a large focus especially within politics and other areas. Therefore, I think that it would be extremely beneficial to have some type of audio recording and embedded image of a head administrative leader in charge of restoring the crisis. I think that this would give the audience more sense of a relief that the problem is being acknowledged and on its way to restoration. A couple other widgets that I think would also be beneficial for this content would be a line graph and an animated list that shows a plan of action. I want to implement a line graph or a fever chart because I want the audience to see the process of the recent event and see how the potential plans can bring growth and development. I also think that having an animated version of the list for the plan of action will show the audience more of the action that will be taking place. I think that physically seeing some type of action put towards the graphic itself will be a connected point for the audience to understand what is to come. For print media having the charts and maps would be very beneficial for the audience to also see.

“Heart Device Might be Useless for Women”

This article has a lot of facts. The first widget that I would want to create is of a beating heart, but not just any beating heart. I would want to have the heart to have one irregular beat that is distinctive from the others. Then the reader will know that there isn’t something quite right with this heart. I would place it on the sidebar of story package where it would be continuously seen. I would want my audience to not overlook this graphic image but to question what’s “wrong with it” I would also to put in an embedded video that is introducing the audience to a physician familiar with the ICDs. However, I would want to make this video animated and made through animations of physicians, patients, and of the ICD but have embedded an audio track of the physician explaining facts and possibilities of the ICD. I would also create a couple different charts of the health risks and benefits for both male and female that have ICDs. I also think having a face to match with the voice over for the video would also be beneficial. Towards the bottom of the page I would also include an image of the physician that spoke on behalf of the content created. For print, I would also want to use an image from the physician that spoke on behalf of the ICDs. I would also continue to have charts and data used to help state the facts for the audience as well for this subject.

Exercise 2:

Graphic 1- Data Visualization. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwjKpbGzq5PTAhVI5IMKHe81A1IQFggaMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.martyduren.com%2F2011%2F09%2F08%2Fthe-growth-of-social-media-graphic%2F&usg=AFQjCNE1v0d1b_ZzXKbQigeBL_N54exPEg&sig2=3a3GqTHIiHs1l4bRNJJ-mQ&bvm=bv.152174688,d.amc

I really like the creation of this graphic because of the many creative ways that the author chose to make the graphic. The author did use a lot of graphs, charts, and different ways to display information and percentages. The strengths of this graphic include the flow and creativity put within the graphic. However, I do wish that the graphics were more spread apart rather than being one skinny graphic ran together. I would have preferred for it to be split up among the page.

Graphic 2-Narrative http://www.sbs.com.au/theboat/

This graphic I really admire because of the effects that the narrative has overall upon the entire site. The background of site first looks like a video of rain but then transitions to a boat at sea. This narrative tells a story about a boat and the journey that it goes about. The strengths of this graphic are very high. The audio, images, and design were heavily thought out and extremely creative to give the viewer an overall experience upon The Boat.

Graphic 3- Instructive http://www.cashfamilyorthodontics.com/fun-stuff/games-band-color-chooser.aspx

Here I have chosen a graphic created by an orthodontist company. This graphic was originally created for those who are soon to be wearing braces. This graphic allows for user to test out different colors along the different brackets of the braces to see which colors that they like best together. I like this graphic because it gets the user active within the site and encourage activity.

Mini Multimedia Story Reflection

My most recent project that I have completed for my multimedia storytelling class was to create a mini multimedia story package. During this process I had learned quite a lot about multimedia, storytelling, and the importance of collaboration within a diverse team of communication majors.

My team created a mini multimedia package called Life After Olivet. We wanted to reach an audience of current and future Olivet students. Our main purpose behind creating this specific package was to highlight the importance of one’s college years at Olivet Nazarene University and what to expect upon graduation. During this process we began to work very well with each other from the start. We all have different strengths in our group and we were able to contribute to our overall goal very well because of that. We had two multimedia majors and two public relations majors.

One takeaway that we learned was understanding the importance of not being afraid of trying new things. Half of our team members were already very knowledgeable in the editing and technical side of multimedia. The other half of our team was very trained in the brand development and audience outreach side of communications. Both sides of the team had to learn how to navigate a new site, create attractive content, and develop relationships with recent ONU alumni to help polish off our final product.

One highlighted area of interested that we all were very passionate about was making sure that we had recorded interviews with ONU alumni that were impacted through the university. One difficulty that we came across was the obstacle of distance. We all had significant people that we wanted to interview but distance of current living situations made this a bit difficult. We were able to find an application that let us record Skype interviews online to use for our project. This was such a helpful tool. However, by the time we were able to navigate it well we did not have enough time for the best editing. For future improvement on our final multimedia package, I think it would be best to keep in mind exactly how an application works and how to navigate it ahead of time before we apply it. Overall I am beyond satisfied with my group and the work that they all have done with Life After Olivet.

A Multimedia Guest Speaker

About a week ago my Multimedia Storytelling class had a great opportunity to have a guest speaker Skype into our class.

Our guest’s name was Melody Alexander. Melody was a past coworker of our professor, Professor McLaughlin. One of the most interesting takeaways that I had learned from our guest speaker was how much multimedia actually works throughout all areas of communications and business. Melody currently works for the University of Kansas as a marketing strategist. One of the of different projects that she had worked on with KU was the KU150. The KU150 was a huge campaign where KU celebrated their 150th anniversary. For this specific campaign, Melody helped make an emotional connection leaving the audience inspired about KU’s future.

Within Melody’s department and their part of the campaign, they were able to receive over 1,500 likes and 2,000 shares on Facebook and resulted in success in T.V. development with more than 2,000 hits on their site. What I found most fascinating was that Melody’s department worked with many other partners and departments to reach their level of success. They couldn’t do this alone. Melody also had a highly skilled and talented team of her own to accomplish their goals. Her team included a writer, an art director, an editor, and a project manager. The multimedia field is not just a one man job.

One of the concepts that I do wish to learn more about is how can public relations work more within multimedia. I have always been a huge fan of mass communications, but I am currently focused on the public relations side of communications for my degree. Upon graduation I would like to learn more ways how to incorporate the two more to increase success within any campaign, project, or event.

Melody’s presentation with my class greatly helped me see another side of communications and to remember the importance of all aspects throughout the entire field- corporate and media.

Multimedia Skills

I have been pretty involved in the mass communication and multimedia side of communication longer than I had thought. When I was in high school I was involved in a radio/TV broadcasting club that aired throughout the entire county in our school district. Everyday we put on a news show and I was usually either a host or entertainment. I also had a opportunity to learn about the editing side with programs like Final Cut Pro and other software.

I began to develop more skills when I entered the communication department my freshman year when I declared multimedia with a concentration in TV/video. I then realized later on that although I am very interested in multimedia, public relations was more of the side of communications that I wanted to be in. Throughout my experience within multimedia and mass comm, I believe that my strengths are founded in photo, design, graphics, and social media.

I currently have a position with a global nonprofit organization as a social strategies and communications assistant. One of the bigger tasks that I have to do is social media management for the organization’s mobilization department. Here I create the graphics posted on the social media sites that we do have. I have always had an eye for creating graphics and graphic design, but I have wanted to learn much more since I began this position. I do believe that I am talented at graphic design but I can improve as well. I would like to learn more about other programs that can help me develop more skills within graphic design and web design. I have also taking a couple photography classes and have quite enjoyed the different projects that I have went about to continue to evolve my creative side. I am also a strong writer. In public relations we need to have strong writers to complete the needs that we have.

I do want to continue to improve in graphics as well as video. I enjoy creating projects with video for different reasons: marketing purposes, community outreach, and personal enjoyment. I would also like to learn more about web design or other web management skills that I can adapt to help me continue to excel in the public relations field.
